Accessibility Note

The cottage has a traditional Norfolk winder staircase, which is a classic feature of older homes in the area. We know that steep stairs can be a concern when booking a historic holiday cottage, so we’ve included these photos to show you the layout.

As you can see, the flight is straight at the top with a turn at the bottom. While they are steeper than a modern house, they are easier to navigate than some original Norfolk winders you might find elsewhere. The stairs are fully carpeted and include handrails for support.

Since everyone’s mobility is different, we hope these photos help you decide if our holiday accommodation is a good fit for your stay. If you have any specific questions about accessibility at Priory Cottage, please do get in touch.

The Finer Details

There are two bedrooms, sleeping up to 4 guests: one double room and a second room containing both a double and a single bed.

Our usual changeover day is Friday.

Arrival is from 3:30 PM and departure by 10:30 AM, but times are extendable when no adjacent booking.

For our current weekly prices and seasonal rates, please view our rental rates page.

Our standard rates are fully inclusive. Bed linen is available as an optional extra for £10 per room, per stay; otherwise, guests are welcome to bring their own. We do not charge extra for dogs or cleaning, and there are no hidden booking fees.

To book a stay at Priory Cottage, please see our booking page. We currently only accept direct bookings, so you won't find us on any third party holiday letting sites such as Airbnb, Booking.com, Vrbo, Norfolk Cottages etc. By booking directly with us, you avoid the service fees charged by third party sites, ensuring you always get the best possible price for your stay.

We offer short breaks and weekend getaways throughout the year, except during July, August and Bank Holiday weeks.

While we primarily cater to holidaymakers looking for a getaway, the cottage is also available to rent for a variety of other short-term needs. We frequently host guests who are visiting friends and family, attending local weddings, or working in the area.

Parking is on the verge outside the cottage, which is common in historic villages. Please be mindful of our lovely neighbours to ensure there is space for everyone.

There is a garden that is separate from the house and reached from the back door via a traditional pedestrian path that runs behind the neighbouring cottages – a common and historic feature of village life in rural Norfolk. The garden can also be accessed via a separate path leading directly from the street. You’ll find a large, fully enclosed garden primarily laid to lawn with established borders. It is a secure space for dogs and comes equipped with table and chairs.

Well-behaved dogs are very welcome at our dog-friendly holiday cottage. They are free to enjoy the large, fully enclosed garden. There is no additional charge, but please let us know that you intend to bring a dog at the time of booking.

Currently, there is no WiFi at the cottage. Because village broadband can be quite slow, we find that guests get much better results using their mobile phone's 4G or 5G data. You can use your phone’s ‘Hotspot’ function to connect laptops or tablets if you need to get online during your stay.

Heating is a combination of night storage, underfloor and electric. There is also an open fireplace in the living room which guests are welcome to use (logs and coal are available to purchase locally).

Hot water is provided by an electric immersion tank. Once switched on, it remains heated 24/7. As this is a storage system rather than an on-demand boiler, the tank will require some recovery time to reheat if a large amount of hot water is used at once.

There is a washing machine and tumble dryer located in the original stone wash-house just outside the back door. The cottage is also equipped with an iron and ironing board, and there is a washing line in the garden for drying clothes in the fresh Norfolk countryside air.

The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering with an air fryer, microwave, and electric cooker with a hob, grill and oven.

The kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher.

There is a hairdryer kept in the back bedroom.

Both tourist attractions are open to visitors, though they have different entry policies. The Castle ruins are free to enter and explore at any time. Castle Acre Priory is a paid-entry English Heritage site, and we highly recommend going inside at least once to see the prior's lodgings and the stunning west front up close. However, you can also enjoy the ruins for free by following the open fields and public footpaths that skirt the perimeter. These fields and paths offer fantastic views at any hour (the ruins look particularly mystical in the dawn mist or during a sunset stroll).

Castle Acre Village Stores (Budgens) is just a short, picturesque walk through the churchyard and village. It is exceptionally well-stocked for a village shop, offering everything from daily essentials to local Norfolk produce and Post Office services. It's open every day except Christmas Day with generous hours. For a larger shop, there is a big Waitrose and Tesco superstore in Swaffham, which are only about a 7-minute drive away from the holiday home.

A gentle amble through the churchyard leads to The Ostrich, the local public house which serves excellent food and a great selection of ales. A few doors down is Wittles, a charming tea room and café perfect for brunch, coffee and home-baked cakes. The Castle Acre Fish & Chip shop is highly recommended if you fancy a night in, or want to eat alfresco while admiring the local scenery.

For traditional home-cooked pub food, the George & Dragon in Newton by Castle Acre is just a mile away on the outskirts of the village. For a scenic car-free walk, you can follow the picturesque Nar Valley Way for about 2.5 miles to reach The Stag in West Acre. All of these establishments are child and dog friendly. You’ll also find many more dining options just a short drive away in Swaffham and the surrounding villages. Opening times may vary by season, so we recommend checking ahead of your visit.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know about Priory Cottage or the village, just drop us a message below and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. You can also call, text or WhatsApp Jill on 07956 667577 or email info@cottagecastleacre.co.uk
